In July of this year, I finished my second triathlon, and this time it was the New Jersey State Olympic Triathlon.  That’s right, I finished this 32- mile race of swimming, biking and running.  Someone asked me before the race what my goal was in the race.  I guess others were racing to win a medal.  I was racing to finish!  I didn’t want to quit.  I didn’t want to be disqualified.  And I didn’t want to die of heat exhaustion.  I just wanted to finish, and by the grace of God and a lot of training, I finished strong.

Proverbs 18:16 says, “A man’s gift opens doors for him and brings him before great men.”  Our talents, abilities, and spiritual charisma will open a lot of doors for us as leaders.  Your charisma may open the doors, but character will determine how you are going to lead once you are before others.  Will you lead with integrity?  Will you cut corners to accomplish your goals?  Will you serve others in the power of God’s Spirit, or will you use power to force people to serve you?  You see, it’s not just about how you start; it’s how you finish.  Read the Bible– there are a lot of leaders who started out well, but did not finish well, and they used their God-given gifts to hurt a lot of people.

I like what Paul says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).  It was an amazing feeling when I ran across that finish line in July.  And so much more will it be when I finish this race called “life”, knowing that I trusted more in His power than in my own abilities, and I led in a way that honored Christ and served others.  Let’s train to reign with Him forever.  Leaders are finishers.

Triathlon Finish 2018

En julio de este año, terminé mi segundo triatlón, y esta vez fue el Triatlón Olímpico de Nueva Jersey. Así es, terminé esta carrera de 51.5k de natación, ciclismo y carrera. Alguien me preguntó antes de la carrera cuál era mi objetivo en la carrera. Supongo que otros corrieron para ganar una medalla. ¡Estaba corriendo para terminar! No quería dejarlo. No quería ser descalificado. Y no quería morir de agotamiento por calor. Solo quería terminar, y por la gracia de Dios y un montón de entrenamiento, terminé fuerte.

Proverbios 18:16 dice: “El don de un hombre le abre puertas y lo lleva ante grandes hombres.” Nuestros talentos, habilidades y carisma espiritual nos abrirán muchas puertas como líderes. Su carisma puede abrir las puertas, pero el carácter determinará cómo conducirá una vez que esté antes que los demás. ¿Dirigirás con integridad? ¿Vas a cortar las esquinas para lograr tus objetivos? ¿Servirás a otros en el poder del Espíritu de Dios, o usarás el poder para forzar a las personas a servirte? Ya ves, no se trata solo de cómo empiezas; es como terminas. Lea la Biblia: hay muchos líderes que comenzaron bien, pero no terminaron bien, y usaron los dones que Dios les dio para herir a mucha gente.

Me gusta lo que dice Pablo: “He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, me he mantenido en la fe.  Por lo demás me espera la corona de justicia que el Señor, el  Juez justo, me otorgará en aquel día; y no solo a mí, sino también a todos los que con amor hayan esperado Su venida” (2 Timoteo 4: 7-8). Fue una sensación increíble cuando me encontré con esa línea de meta en julio. Y mucho más será cuando termine esta carrera llamada “vida”, sabiendo que confié más en Su poder que en mis propias habilidades, y conduje de una manera que honraba a Cristo y servía a los demás. Vamos a entrenar para reinar con Él para siempre. Los líderes son finalistas.
